First I would like to say Thank you for this webpage! I never would of thought so many people would have my disease! I was first diagnosed with PCOS about 6 years ago. My symptoms started when I was about 18, I went 8 months without a period and my doctors didn't know what was wrong. It was after the birth of my second daughter, which took about 6 years to conceive that I finally wanted a name for my "period problem". After blood work and an ultrasound, I was diagnosed with PCOS. My doctor had said the only treatment was birth control pills, which I cannot take due to migraines. So, I either had to suffer with migraines or screwed up periods! I chose the screwed up periods! Over the next 3 years of being diagnosed, I lost 50 lbs. (starving myself). I finally had normal periods and I was not moody and miserable. Well, over the last 3 years, I have gained that 50lbs. back, do not know how, I do not eat alot at all! I finally have had it with PCOS and drew the line when I started noticing the hair growth on my breasts and chest. It is embarassing enough to have to deal with excess hair on my face and arms, but my breasts and chest was a whole different story! I had told my mom, what is next, will I grow a penis! I feel like a man! Well any way, I got a referral to a endocrinologist and was hoping for a miracle! I was ready, I had printed articles with as much information about PCOS I could find on the internet (in case she didn't know) and went to see this endocrinologist. She did not give me the miracle I was hoping for! She couldn't give me any of the medication I wanted due to it causes diarrhea, which I have irrititable bowel syndrome. She told me with proper diet and exercise I would lose weight. About the hair growth, nothing she knew of would help stop it! So, I was really depressed! I started a low calorie, low fat way of eating and lost nothing, it seemed as though I had gained! Over the last few months, I have been reading about the low carb diets and that have worked with people with PCOS. I decided to try it, last Sunday I started my diet and in 4 days I have lost 5 pounds! It is just the beginning and I know I have a long road ahead of me but am more than determined to do it. So, if anyone would like to e-mail me, please do so, I would like to share stories and experiences with other PCOS people.
