Rachel-- The real probelm is that there isn't one central DR. that can treat ALL of pcos symptoms. It could be that many of the medications that haven't worked in the past will work later when combined with another medication for pcos. Don't give up hope. One day there may be a central Dr. that is a gynecologist, infertility specialist, endocrinologist, dermatologist, hair loss expert, etc...etc...all combined in one who understands pcos better than rocket scientists understand engineering. And the neat thing is that "he" may be a computer program that is accessible to every family physician in the world. [This message has been edited by Kathie (edited 05-04-2002).] IP: Logged |

Rachel - I didnt want to recommend this while you were on Accutane, but now that you have stopped, I will. Would you consider the Carley's? I know it has worked wonders for me and others, granted, my acne was not severe, but is was between mild and moderate. Hope this helps! IP: Logged |

Hi,i've got a couple of ?'s for you.First one how long were you on spiro and how much did you take?I am 29 years old and i have suffered with acne for my whole life.I have been on 3 courses of accutane and retin a and antibiotics.About 5 years ago i went on spironolactone i started with 200mgs perday and now i only take 100 mgs and my skin has never looked better!I also use murad products on my face.I still get a couple of pimples and i do get a little bit of rosecea but i never get cysts anymore or the kind of acne that scars. When i do have a minor break out it goes away quickly and it's nothing that i cant conceal. Is this your first accutane course?Sometimes it takes 2 or 3 to control acne but accutane did not work for me because my acne is hormonal and my skin became greasy again as soon as i was done with my courses of accutane. For hormonal acne you have to slow down your androgens and stop them from putting out so much oil and the only way to do that is with spiro or birth control pills.Because these meds get to the root of your problem.Spironolactone takes patience! It doesn't work over night. And you need to start with a high dose.It took me about 6 months of 200mgs per day to control my acne and oil production.I hope that i have helped you in some way.Acne is heartbreaking.I've suffered for years.I think that accutane only works well for men because they dont have the hormone fluctuation that women do.But talk to your derm anyway. And also murad has worked miracles for me and it has made alot of my scars almost invisible!I use the acne prone glycolic gel everynight and it works better than retin a. Rachel Please don't get down. It took a month for my face to get clear after the roccutane. I came off the tablets and it wasn't until at least a month afterwards that my skin could be classed as clear. I haven't had a real problem since. Give it time. You've had a very strong chemical in your body doing God knows what to your insides. You've only just finished your tablets so give your body a chance to get used to not having that chemical in you and allow it to get used to regulating your skin for itself. Things will sort itself out. Try to keep your skin clean - I use baby soap morning and night and I was told to keep my face moisturised. Apparently if your skin is dry, your glands in your skin produce more oil to moisturise it (Roaccutane shrinks your glands but doesn't get rid of them). I use a fragarance free, perfume free moisturising lotion from Tescos at 89p a pot. Lasts for ever, but doesn't clog my pores up. So give it time Rachel. Be thankful that you're not putting that horrible tablet in your body anymore. When the sun comes out (if ever!) get your face out there. The sun will help your skin and will make you feel better! So don't give up. As they say, the best things come to those who wait! Keep yourself healthy and drink lots of water. Keep smiling ------------------ IP: Logged |

Hi Rachel, I wish I could give you a great big hug! I have been in your shoes and I know exactly how you feel, it just doesn't seem fair! Last time I went to the derm, I was the only one there with bad skin and of course everyone stared, that makes it so much more difficult. I also took accutane about 3 years ago. It took about a month after my final dose for my face to completely clear up and it stayed that way for about two years, and I loved every minute of it! Then I became pregnant with my wonderful daughter, and my acne came back with a vengeance! I am now expecting number two and my acne started up again. I tried Carley's this time as I can't take any meds and it is like a miracle cleanser for me! I can touch my face right now, and there are no bumps anywhere, which is amazing to me. I say it is worth a try, you get a complete refund if it doesn't work for you. My acne was also cystic and unresponsive, so give it a try, it just might work! My heart goes out to you...hang in there. ------------------ "Never say never. Sometimes the things you think'll never happen, do." IP: Logged |

(((hugs))) rachel! I am sorry to hear that you are feeling down. Although it seems helpless, you have to be patient and give it time. It hasn't even been a month since your last pill, so as hard as it may be, you must give it time. It took you four months to be on accutane, so you can definitely wait a month or two to see you face 100% clear. You are right, pcos makes acne more resistant, so this is why it takes even longer to see results. Like sue recommended, drink lots of water & don't pick your face (that's a major no-no). Hang in there buddy! IP: Logged |

Rachel The only thing that I'm on now is Dianette. I haven't been too happy with the dianette but am a bit scared to see what will happen if I come off it! As I've said before, I look after my skin now and keep a tube of Panoxyl handy in case of a break out. It's very harsh stuff and doesn't do my skin any good, but it gets rid of the spots pretty quick. I'm also taking evening primrose oil capsules which were quite cheap from Tescos. It's got vitamin E in it which is excellent for skin. The evening primrose itself is meant to help with womens hormones - I need all the help I can get to stop the PMT like mood swings! I was told by my dermatologist that I could try breaking open a vitamin E capsule and spreading the oil on my face. Not sure I fancy that! It will take a while for the chemicals to work their way out of your system. I've been left with dry skin everywhere, but it's nothing I can't handle! Try to get some sun on your face in a few weeks. It is great for drying up the skin. My mum bought me a facial sun lamp when I came off roaccutane to help my skin get back on track. SO keep your chin up Rachel. All will be well. Give your skin a chance to mend. Sue ------------------ IP: Logged |

Hey Rachel, I too, did not completely respond to Accutane - and now I have even a worse condition HS (boil-type lesions in the armpit and groin) After my first Accutane treatment five years ago my face was clear for about 2 years, then my acne came back with a vengence and literally overnight, I was so depressed I didn't leave the house for a few days. I went back on Accutane at a much higher dosage which seemed to do the trick until this past January when my acne returned along with psoriasis! Meanwhile, between my two Accutane treatments I developed HS, which my derm was perplexed by because he thought the Accutane would help my HS. Now, I don't blame Accutane for my HS - but I do believe that Accutane triggered my genetic dispostion to getting HS. What I'm trying to say is whatever you do - DO NOT go back to Accutane - it's evil and only treats the symptoms, not the cause. I was diagnosed with PCOS in February and I went to an endocrinologist and told her about my skin problems (at the time I was also having digestive issues too). I basically found out that the foods I was eating were triggering hormones which caused my skin and digestive problems. She advised me to either try Sugarbusters or the Carbo-addicts diet. I also have been on the Yasmin BCP since December (which contains 25mg of spiro). Today my face is clear of the acne and psoriasis that had developed. Although my HS is still persistent, it is less and I contribute that to my diet as well as the spiro. I hope to actually go on Spiro in addition to Yasmin later this month when I return to my endo - and I have heard that spiro can take up to a year to reach it's full effectiveness. You should definately consider spiro again and take a good look at what you eat. Refined sugars and flours (even dairy products) make people more prone to skin problems. Keep your chin up and keep researching...I believe you will find what's right for you IP: Logged |

Dear Rachel, (((((BIGHUGS))))) About 20 years ago I took accutane for my cystic acne, I remember the derm telling me that I might have to take another round of it, if it didn't help the first time. I was very lucky that it worked during/after round one, I wish it had worked for you too! Oh and when I say it worked for me I don't mean that my skin was completely clear of acne, I just wasn't getting the big cysts on my chin anymore after that. I still get some pimples and my gyno recommends that I try Spiro for my acne and hair issues. Also I wanted to thank you for sharing your Accutane journal with us I love Kathies idea of the super pcos specialist! Take care, IP: Logged |

quote: Hi rachel,I dont remember if i broke out at first when i first went on them. But i will tell you that when i got very sick about 2 years ago i stopped taking spiro because i kept forgeting and i was vomiting alot and this sickness lasted for about a month so i did not take my spiro for about 2 months and face started to break out real bad and my hair growth started to come back so i went back on the spiro and i did break out at first and then my skin got better and better.I also am taking Aldactone and this is the brand name stuff and i was told that brand name makes all the difference in the world as far as spiro goes.Pharmacists will tell you there is no difference between the generic and brand name but doctors will tell that there is.But again,i would talk to your doctor about it first because there are a few women out there that will actually get more acne and hair growth from spiro. It says so under rare side effects. Hi Rachel, try not to worry! I was on accutane years ago (7 or 8) and it did help then, but as I got older and my PCOS symptoms got worse, the acne came back, not as bad, but still there. I have to second Katfisch, again about the Carely's. I'm on my second bottle and my skin is amazingly clear. you should try it, it smells good and makes your skin feel good even if it didn't help the acne, which it does. good luck. -sue IP: Logged |

Have you been tested for allergies? My best friend had acne - constantly and she tried everything , nothing helped. They told her, it is her hormones. But luckily she had an allergy test. Find out that she is allergic to milkproducts. Now she does not eat or drink anything which has milk in it, two months later the face is clear and beautiful. Maybe it is an option you should try? ------------------ IP: Logged |
